How do Extreme Heat and Cold Affect Car Battery Performance?

Don't ignore the effects of extreme temperatures on car battery performance. We at Turner Kia are proud to help you keep your battery in great shape. Because your battery's operation is dependent on a chemical reaction, the outside temperature plays a crucial role in its performance. The preferred operating temperature for car batteries is 80° F (26.7° C); anything significantly above or below that may lead to issues.

  • Higher temperatures cause corrosion within cells, reducing a battery's lifespan.
  • Cold temperatures slow down chemical reactions, leading to a sluggish battery.

Batteries are rated by CCA, or cold-cranking amps. The higher the number, the better the car battery will work in extreme heat or cold.
